she/her
Hello! I’m Sara. I often work with people who are feeling stuck and disconnected from themselves and their loved ones because of past experiences that continue to impact them in the present. You may notice that strategies you’ve developed to survive those periods of your life no longer serve you, but are unsure how to change. Taking the first step to get help and approach the thoughts, emotions, and events that have felt too difficult to touch can be intimidating and anxiety provoking. As your therapist it is my goal to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, and accepting environment for you to process your past and find new ways of caring for yourself and showing up in the world that feels authentic to you.
I operate from a trauma informed and strengths based approach, understanding that you are the expert of your own story and already have the strength within you for growth and change. I have a background in working with childhood trauma, grief, anxiety, perfectionism, LGBTQIA+ concerns, ADHD, and autism. I take a more relaxed and laid back approach, and often incorporate humor and metaphor as we explore the concerns bringing you to therapy. I utilize techniques informed by Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness. I encourage your feedback throughout the process on what is working and what I may change to better serve your needs.
I provide individual psychotherapy for adolescents and adults both in person and virtually. If you’re interested in starting sessions with me feel free to reach out for a brief phone consultation so we can see if we are a good fit!

Hi, I’m Tara. My intention is to provide a nurturing space for others to explore their life experience no matter what they may have endured. I strive to help others find a sense of well-being that is curated through their own internal awareness. I offer clients nervous system support so that they can learn to rediscover their needs and advocate for themselves. I aim to guide individuals in liberating their authentic nature and empowering their sense of being. I encourage others to find their own voice and solutions, ultimately helping them discover the way they think, feel, and what their strengths are.

I embody a person-centered, and humanistic approach to foster acceptance and self-love. I bring in a compassion-based feminist perspective to support others in rediscovering their authority in life. Additionally, I offer nature therapy and experiential art to provide an environment that fosters mindfulness and reconnection to the self. I enjoy working with those exploring parenthood, motherhood, divorce, and co-parenting, religious trauma, and creativity. I blend both artistic forms of psychotherapy with evidenced-based practices to support my clients emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
I offer individual psychotherapy for adults in person and virtually. If you’d like to see if we are a good fit for one another, let’s schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation so I can answer any questions you might have.

Hi, I’m Steph! I am a deeply intuitive counselor, and I prioritize creating a place for you where all parts of you are seen, connected, and empowered. I believe that my work with you is to walk as a collaborative guide and compassionate partner as you navigate healing and growth in your life. I aim to be a giant mirror reflecting your own beauty, strength, and dynamic being back to you when you are struggling to clearly see yourself. I believe you hold the ability to heal within you, and it is my honor to come alongside you, bring you hope, and help you understand what you need while creating the life you want.
I specialize in working with trauma, loss, LGBTQ+ issues, chronic illness/disability/pain, disordered eating, body image (through a fat-positive, weight-inclusive lens), religious trauma, couples and family work, and addiction recovery support. I am an Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Somatic and Attachment-Focused EMDR practitioner. I also draw from and work with Somatic IFS, mindfulness techniques, breath work, and other somatic techniques, Narrative therapy, Feminist theory, Polyvagal theory, and Attachment theory. As an added holistic option for clients who would like: we can incorporate astrology, energy work, and/or tarot/oracle cards into your healing journey as I am formally trained in astrology and energy work. I know these practices can be powerful tools to enhance holistic healing for those that are open to exploring and using them. In addition, I have a robust network of massage therapists, energy workers, sex coaches, etc. that I refer clients to for extra help when working together to find healing for ALL parts of you.
I provide individual, couples, and family therapy for adults and pre-teens/adolescents virtually, so you can join from the comfort of your own space. I’d love to connect with you! Let’s schedule a phone consultation, so I can answer any questions you may have.

Hey, I’m Jo! I have been practicing therapy for 12 years now and I really enjoy being a therapist! If you think you are interested in working with me here are a few things I think you should know… First, is that EVERYONE has a story to live and share. Second, life isn’t truly that black and white, it’s gray. The gray is where life and healing intersect. The gray is where I help create the space for you to talk and process all of the unspoken, hidden, and broken places of your life. It will be challenging at times but you aren’t alone. Third, it is my intention to provide a judgement-free space where you can be YOU and explore the journey ahead. I will utilize my extensive specialty training and education, client work experiences, and the life lessons I’ve learned along the way to help support and guide you. I can’t promise to “fix” you or make “things better” but I can assure you that I will be honest, empathetic, and attuned to your needs.
My therapeutic approach is a mixture of what I think might be most helpful to you. I typically utilize modalities such as art and play therapy, trauma-focused CBT, attachment theory, mindfulness, and Gestalt theory in my work. I specialize in working with women and teens (12 yrs +) who have lived through sexual trauma, child abuse, human trafficking, domestic violence, or a victim of a crime. Trauma survivors can experience an array of symptoms and feelings such as: difficulty trusting others, nightmares, difficulty sleeping, loss of appetite, anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, negative self-talk, and low self- esteem that can impair daily functioning. My work with teens includes addressing emotional dysregulation, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, bullying, and many self-identity issues. I also specialize in working with women whom I like to describe as “high achievers”. You’ve got an incredibly high capacity to take on tasks and perform well in school or the workplace… and yet you feel unseen. You often experience pressure to outperform everyone, including yourself. You are also ready to make a life change rooted in fulfillment and desire but you don’t know where to start. If I’ve just described you, then you’ve already taken the most important step… getting help.
I have been a witness to many clients making major positive life changes, managing their symptoms, experiencing a better quality of life, and healing that takes them beyond their best expectations. So, if you are here and reading this I believe that you aren’t LOST but right where you are supposed to be. I’d be more than willing to chat with you about your processing and healing journey. Just reach out! jo@atltraumatherapy.com

Wood Alter, LMSW

Hi! I’m Wood, and I’m an EMDR therapist. Like most of my clients, my life took unexpected twists and turns to lead me to where I am today. Before going back to school for my MSW, I graduated undergrad with an industrial and systems engineering degree. As such, I work with individuals struggling to navigate their current experiences, especially those who feel the roots of their issues lie in their past. Aside from EMDR, I make use of an eclectic mix of dialectics, parts work, and existential concepts to help my clients find the peace they need in order to grow and thrive.
While I have evolved a much more holistic approach to my understanding of people and their life circumstances since my undergrad days, I still utilize my analytical nature to assist clients in recognizing the patterns that influence their lives. Identifying patterns can be a rewarding and enlightening experience for my clients, but I recognize that awareness is only the first step on the journey to change.
Because I believe that is the goal of therapy: Change. I understand that change can be a very frightening concept for people. Many of us don’t know where to begin - what changes do we want to make? How do we go about making them? I make use of dialectical concepts and parts work to help you answer these questions for yourself, and EMDR to work through past trauma to help you create the sense of security you need to take action. By approaching the challenges you face from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective, together we can ensure you have the necessary resources and support to successfully navigate the twists and turns of your own journey.

I promise to meet you where you are in life and work with you to progress toward you where you want to be.

Attachment-Focused EMDR | Somatic Resourcing | Feminist Counseling | Harm Reduction

You’ve worked hard to survive — and maybe even to heal. But lately, something’s shifted. Familiar habits are creeping back in: drinking more, zoning out, endless scrolling, lying awake at night. You might be starting to unpack things you’ve carried since childhood, and it’s hard to know what’s true and what just kept you safe. You’re not looking to be fixed — you want space to be fully yourself, in all your contradictions, grief, humor, and strength. If that sounds like you, or if you’re just beginning to ask different questions about your life, this might be the right place to start.

As a trans and neurodivergent therapist, I know what it’s like to navigate systems that weren’t built with you in mind. I bring that lived understanding to my work with clients who are exploring identity, healing from trauma, and reclaiming the truths that have always been theirs. I work with people who are carrying pain in both the body and the psyche and are ready to explore what healing could look like on their own terms. You might be managing a mental health diagnosis or feeling the weight of burnout. Maybe you’re questioning your relationship to alcohol or drugs. Or you’re working to make sense of your experience of gender, neurodivergence, or chronic illness. Whatever you’re carrying, our work together can help you reconnect with clarity and strength.

I’m not the kind of therapist who stares at you in silence — I show up fully. My work is grounded in deep listening, humor, and trust. Therapy with me might include laughter, creating new rituals for yourself, or practicing how to feel safe in your body again. When you’re ready, we can also work with EMDR to process the memories or beliefs that are still holding pain in place — or we can start by just getting grounded and curious together. I’ve spent years in spaces where people are rebuilding from trauma — including serving addiction communities, harm reduction programs, and queer/trans support networks. My practice is shaped by those lived lessons, evidenced-based practices, and a feminist counseling framework.

Starting therapy can be daunting — especially if you’ve been dismissed or misunderstood in the past. If something in this resonates, I invite you to reach out. I’m currently accepting new clients for Summer 2025 and offer virtual sessions via video or phone. I’m available for afternoon, evening, and weekend appointments. I also offer free consultations so we can make sure it feels like the right fit. You don’t have to keep pushing through on your own. Let’s talk about what healing might mean for you — and how we can walk that path together.

Hi, I’m Liesl. Regardless of what brings you to counseling, my hope is create a space where you can bring your full authentic self. I value a holistic approach and do my best to understand the unique perspectives and experiences you have, intersecting identities you bring into the room, the systems you live in and how all those things show up in a therapeutic space. I believe that by diving deep, connecting with your body, gaining insight and self-awareness, learning tools to navigate distress, and exploring how the past has impacted your present, you can begin to take steps towards growth and healing. I feel honored to sit with clients and be entrusted with their stories and I am often inspired by my clients and the things they share. I view you as the expert of your own life, and I want counseling to feel collaborative and for you to feel empowered in your experience, therefore, openness, communication and feedback are very important to me. I am committed to working with diverse groups of people and aim to celebrate the unique differences that make us human.
The majority of my work with clients’ centers around issues such as childhood trauma, relationship trauma, religious trauma, self-harm behaviors, grief and loss, disordered eating behaviors, life transitions, anxiety and depression. I am passionate about working with individuals who are exploring aspects of their identity, gender, and/or sexual orientation and working with LGBTQIA+ couples. I have significant experience working with people who use substances, so I enjoy working with people in any phase of recovery, whether sobriety or harm reduction is for you. Lastly, as a former collegiate athlete, I love supporting other athletes struggling to manage the pressure and expectations of performance while managing daily stressors.
I don’t believe one therapeutic approach fits all so I like to tailor my approach to meet your needs. I approach every client from a person-centered approach utilizing a strengths-based, trauma-informed, womanist and compassionate lens. I often pull techniques from Acceptance and Commitment theory (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Theory (DBT), Relational Cultural Theory (RCT), Somatic Theory (a body-centered approach) and systems theory which typically involve conversations around mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, self-compassion, connection, attachment, identity, values and more. Additionally, I have specialized training in trauma-informed cognitive behavioral theory (TF-CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Gottman Couples Theory. If you have any questions about how these theories look in practice, please feel free to ask!
I work with adolescents, young adults, adults, couples and families both virtually and in-person at our Smyrna location. Finding a therapist can be extremely challenging, and the best way to see if I may be a good fit for you is by connecting and scheduling a phone consultation. Contact me so I can answer any questions you may have.

*Erica is not accepting new clients at this time*
Hi! I’m Erica. My goal as a therapist is to create a safe and trauma informed environment to allow each one of my clients to explore themselves and their stories in an accepting space, free of judgment. I operate from a feminist, sex-positive, and antiracist perspective. I value consent and autonomy: I believe that clients have the power to heal from within, and that they are the experts on their own lives. I aim to facilitate growth and exploration with clients to help them notice negative beliefs and maladaptive thoughts and behaviors with the goal of identifying where these came from, and ultimately shifting to a more adaptive existence.
I provide a person-centered approach, incorporating compassion, humor, unconditional positive regard, authenticity, and warmth. In addition to helping clients learn new coping skills, I aim to assist in facilitating deeper processing of the past in order to make sense of the present. I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, learn more here) and utilize a number of other modalities dependent on the client's individual goals.
